Calcium and Vitamin D

Calcium and vitamin D are needed for proper development and fitness of our bones and teeth. In addition, calcium and vitamin D are also required for proper development and working of our muscle system and nervous system. Obviously, these two nutrients are very essential for healthy living. It should be noted that calcium is the actual nutrient that is required for proper development and working of our bones, muscle system and nervous system. However, our body cannot just absorb and use the calcium that we attain through our daily food intake without proper amount of vitamin D. Thus, vitamin D is needed for proper assimilation of calcium.

Deficiency of calcium and vitamin D may cause a number of serious health issues and sicknesses. As for example, a child suffering from deficiency of calcium and vitamin D may fall prey to serious disease like rickets. The child may also suffer an abrupt muscle and nervous system. Deficiency of vitamin D in adult people may result in rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and other major bone problems. One can avoid deficiency of vitamin D and calcium by taking proper food regularly to maintain the levels of vitamin D and calcium in our body.

It would be difficult to suggest which nutrient is more necessary for a healthy body and it is advised to take proper balance diet. Our body can produce our own vitamin D in presence of direct sunlight. However, our daily routine doesn’t allow much time to be spent under direct sun. Furthermore, direct sun rays may also cause skin problems such as rashes, red patches, and skin cancer. However, studies have suggested that vitamin D actually helps in preventing at least seventeen types of cancers. There are many food items that contain healthy amount of calcium and vitamin D and we should include such food items in our daily food intake.

While everyone needs proper amounts of calcium and vitamin D in their body irrespective of their ages, elderly people require more calcium and vitamin D to remain healthy. Deficiency of calcium and vitamin D may cause serious illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. A newly born child requires around 400 IU of vitamin D daily, an adult person requires around 600 IU of vitamin D regularly, and an elderly person above age 70 is generally required to take at least 800 IU of vitamin D per day.

While deficiency of calcium and vitamin D may cause various health issues, excess of vitamin D may also cause some health issues. However, the probable health issues caused by vitamin D toxicity often are less serious than the probable health issues related with deficiency of vitamin D. Excess of vitamin D can help a cancer patient to successfully defeat cancer and get cured. Certain food items that are rich source of calcium and vitamin D include fortified milk, fortified cheese, fortified margarine, fortified fruits juices, orange juice, and some fishes such as salmon, tuna, and sardines.
