Side Effects of Vitamin C

Side effects of vitamin C may either mean the side effects of vitamin C deficiency, or side effects of vitamin C in excess. While we know that vitamin C is essential for human body and it is necessary for proper development, health and well being of a human body, we also know that the general requirement of vitamin C for a healthy body is very limited and small. So what happens as side effects of vitamin C in excess, or what happens as side effects of vitamin C in deficiency?

The normal requirement of vitamin C for a healthy adult male is 90 mgs and for a healthy grown up female is 75 mgs. This amount is very less and can be attained naturally through balanced food intake. One should add some citric fruits such as lemon in their daily food intake. They may also enjoy eating fruits like strawberries, acerola cherries, kiwi, papaya, guava, Amalaki, blackcurrant and others regularly. Furthermore, there are many vegetables that offer good quantity of vitamin C and these vegetables include broccoli, spinach, bell pepper, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, cauliflower and many other vegetables. Taking these fruits and vegetables regularly will avoid any side effects of vitamin C deficiency and it will also avoid dangers of side effects of vitamin C in excess.

If vitamin C is in deficiency, or if a person is suffering from deficiency of vitamin C, he or she will suffer weak bones, muscles and improper nervous system. He will also suffer issues related with weak immune system and he may fall prey to regular colds easily. He will also face respiratory troubles if he is in habit of heavy smoking. Vitamin C deficiency also causes easy bleeding and it may result in serious illnesses like scurvy. On the other hand, side effects of vitamin C in excess are not that much serious and they are rare too. Vitamin C easily dissolves in water and hence, even if someone has taken excess of vitamin C, he doesn’t need to bother too much about it as the excess will be removed through the passage of urine. A person can easily consume 2000 mgs of vitamin C without actually suffering any side effects and related issues.

Yet, in some cases, excess of vitamin C may cause vitamin C toxicity. Vitamin C toxicity causes stomach troubles, gastrointestinal problems, lose motions, and it may result in diarrhea too. These are some common cases of side effects of vitamin C but these happen very rarely. In certain cases, as in case of postmenopausal ladies who are already suffering diabetes, excess of vitamin C may also cause some heart problems and hence, postmenopausal women should avoid excess of vitamin C especially if they are suffering problems related with diabetes. Heart problems as one of the side effects of vitamin C in excess are very rare yet one need to be cautious about such side effects. If a person is prescribed to take overdoses of vitamin C, it is preferential to take liposome vitamin C as it avoids the dangers of side effects of vitamin C to a great extent.
