Too Much Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a necessary nutrient for our body and since it is easily soluble in water, too much vitamin C also doesn’t cause too big problems to ignore the advantages of vitamin C. Too much vitamin C may cause vitamin C toxicity that we will discuss in this article but first, let us discover about the importance and uses of vitamin C or, what is vitamin C.

Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid and it is known for its high solubility in water. This specific property of solubility of vitamin C in water helps a person to tolerate the side effects if that person takes too much of vitamin C. This nutrient is very helpful for our body as it helps in rebuilding of bones, muscles, muscle tissues, body tissues and blood vessels. That is, vitamin C is very helpful because of its healing effects on our body. In addition, vitamin C is highly strong antioxidant because of which, it can be used as a preventive treatment against various types of cancer. During the cancer treatment, doctors often prescribe too much of vitamin C doses for their patients. Often, the side effects of too much of vitamin C proves to be lesser important than the positive effects of vitamin C on cancer patients and hence, doctors risks for vitamin toxicity in their patients.

Vitamin C can be naturally attained through vegetable food as many fruits contain too much of vitamin C. All citric fruits are rich resources of vitamin C and other fruits like strawberries, papaya, water melon, guava, blackcurrant, kiwi, acerola cherries, and other fruits also provide good amount of vitamin C. Along with these fruits, people may also attain vitamin C through consuming vegetables like tomatoes, cauliflowers, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and bell pepper. Furthermore dark green leafy vegetables are also rich source of vitamin C and these leafy vegetables include spinach, turnip green leaves, mustard green leaves, chard, watercress, and kale. In general, every person uses these eatable vegetables and fruits and hence, deficiency of vitamin C is very rare case. However, deficiency of vitamin C may result in health issues like scurvy, and easy bleeding. It should also be noted that one cannot eat that amount of fruits or vegetables that will create problems of too much of vitamin C.

To attain more idea about what is too much of vitamin C, let us discuss about general requirements of vitamin C by a healthy person. An adult male healthy person can easily tolerate up to 2000 mg of vitamin C daily, however, the requirements of a healthy male adult is just 90 mg of vitamin C. The excess of vitamin C is easily removed through urination. On the other hand, a female healthy adult requires around 75 mg of vitamin C. Too much of vitamin C means more than 2000 mg of vitamin C daily in a continuous manner and such doses of vitamin C can be prescribed only for cancer patients as it proves to be helpful against cancer.
