Vitamin C Toxicity Symptoms

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient for our body which is needed for good healthy; however, one should be aware of vitamin C toxicity too. Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid. It is a water-soluble vitamin and it is often found in various citric fruits. This vitamin C is very essential for healthy living as it is required in our body for various biochemical reactions and some of its important usage in our body includes the creation of neurotransmitters and it is also used in production of collagen in our body. Vitamin C is also useful for its antioxidant properties and it protects our cells and tissues from damage. However, excess of vitamin C may create issues of vitamin C toxicity and one should remain careful about it. Being water soluble, vitamin C toxicity is rare because the excess amount of vitamin C is ejected out of our body through urine. However, high dosages may cause vitamin C toxicity and some other side effects.

According to some medical research reports, a healthy adult male can tolerate around 2000 mg of vitamin C but doses above this amount may result in vitamin C toxicity and corresponding side effects.

There can be a number of side effects of excessive vitamin C which is caused due to very high dosages of vitamin C. Some very common side effects include gastric problems, loose motions, upset stomach, and it may cause diarrhea. These are not very severe side effects and a person gets relief as soon as he stops taking high dosages of vitamin C because vitamin C toxicity decreases with the passage of body fluids through urine. However, continuous high doses of vitamin C may cause further vitamin C toxicity that will exacerbate your sickness as it may result in gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal cramps. The reason for all these side effects is the osmotic properties of vitamin C. The more vitamin C there will be in your intestines, the more water it will attract in there and that will cause cramping, gastric troubles and diarrhea.

In some patients suffering from vitamin C toxicity, some other symptoms can also be observed such as, these patients suffering from high vitamin C concentration may suffer from cardiovascular or heart diseases. Postmenopausal women who already suffer from diabetes can easily suffer cardio problems because of excessive vitamin C. In some cases, patients may suffer high risks of developing kidney stones because of very large dosages of vitamin C. However, such cases are very rare and not many persons suffering from vitamin C toxicity have complained about kidney stones.
