Vitamin C Toxicity?

While we know that vitamin C is essential for our body to maintain good health, vitamin C toxicity is also an important aspect to be known about. Deficiency of vitamin C may cause a number of health problems and diseases but too much excess of vitamin C is also not a good option as it may cause vitamin C toxicity. Symptoms of vitamin C toxicity are constipation, gastric troubles, loose motions, abdominal cramps, and so on. However, vitamin C toxicity is a rare phenomenon as a healthy person can actually absorb a lot of vitamin C without suffering any side effects.

It should be noticed that unlike vitamin D, vitamin D is easily soluble in water and it is not soluble in fats. This is the reason why vitamin C is often taken as a water solution. This property of vitamin c helps in reducing the chances of vitamin C toxicity. While the average quantity of vitamin C required to maintain a good health for a healthy adult male is around 90 mgs while a healthy adult female requires just 75 mgs every day, a healthy person can easily take around 2000 mg of vitamin C without worrying about any side effects. This is because of the fact that since vitamin C is highly soluble in water, the excess of vitamin C will be easily removed through the urinary passage and that will prevent or protect the consumer against the side effects of excessive vitamin C or vitamin C toxicity.
In fact in some cases, a patient of deadly diseases like cancer may be prescribed to take very high doses of vitamin C and this is because of the anti-carcinogen effects of vitamin C. While very high doses of vitamin C will certainly cause vitamin C toxicity, it is considered that the problems faced because of vitamin C toxicity are negligible in comparison to the health profits of very high levels of vitamin C in blood of a cancer patient. According to some recent medical research reports, a cancer patient having high concentration of vitamin C in his blood will have better chances to survive and win against cancer than a patient having low levels of vitamin C in his blood.

Now when we know that vitamin C toxicity may cause troubles in a healthy person’s body, it is advisable to avoid excessive vitamin C and in fact, if a person depends only on natural food items to attain required vitamin C, there won’t be any chances of vitamin C toxicity. Certain food items that contains high amount of vitamin C include fruits and vegetables. Strawberries, sour sop, sweet apple, Amalaki, acerola cherries, blackcurrant, and kiwi are a few fruits that contain rich amount of vitamin C. Vegetables that contain rich amount of vitamin C include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, bell pepper, tomatoes, and cauliflower. In addition, all rich green leafy vegetables such as mustard greens, turnip greens, and spinach contains rich amount of vitamin C.
