Vitamin D3

Vitamin D is an important nutrient which is required by our body and hence, we should know about what are vitamin D, vitamin D2, and vitamin D3. Vitamin D is important because it helps our body to absorb and assimilate calcium and other important nutrients for proper growth. Furthermore, vitamin D is also required for better skin and proper growth of bones, nervous system, and muscle system. The total vitamin D present in our blood is actually a mixture of vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. It is important to understand the difference between vitamin D2 and vitamin D3.

Our body and body of all of animals are able to produce its own vitamin D. This type of vitamin D which is produced by body of animals is known as vitamin D3. On the other hand, plants can also produce vitamin D and the vitamin D that we obtain by consuming plants and other non-vegetarian food items is known as vitamin D2. It should be noted that our body can sustain excess of vitamin D2 to an extent but excess of vitamin D3 may create vitamin D toxicity and other health issues. This is the reason why it is necessary to know about the actual amount of vitamin D for a healthy human body.

A child below age one year may absorb 400 IU of vitamin D per day but a child above one year up to age 70 years required to take at least 600 IU of vitamin D regularly. On the other hand, an elderly person above 70 years need to take extra care for his or her deteriorating bones, muscles and nervous system and hence, he or she will require higher amount of vitamin D. For an elderly person, 800 IU of vitamin D everyday is required.

One can attain vitamin D2 by taking fortified milk, fortified cheese, fortified margarine, fortified fruit juices and oranges. In addition, one can also attain vitamin D3 by consuming certain fishes such as tuna fishes, sardines, and salmon fishes that are considered rich source of vitamin D3. While taking proper amount of vitamin D is necessary for our body, excess of it may cause health issues. However, even excess of vitamin D in our blood and body has its own advantages. According to recent medical research studies, overdoses of vitamin D for increasing the level of vitamin D in blood of a cancer patient can help the patient to attain treatment and cure of cancer successfully. It has also been found that adequate or high level of vitamin D can help in preventing at least seventeen types of cancers. This is why people often ignore the consequences of excess of vitamin D3 and opts for taking as much vitamin D as they can.

Now when we know the importance of vitamin D and difference between vitamin D2 and vitamin D3, we can manage our daily food intake properly to maintain good levels of vitamin D in our body as it will help in maintaining good health.
